CENTER FOR EDUCATION AND REHABILITATION

in Dabrowa Gornicza is a unique day-care facility for children and youth with disabled motorical abilities, with coupled developmental defects, both for intellectually ąbrowaąąretarded and normal.

Our pupils are admitted on neurologist's recommendation (small children) or directed by the psychologic-pedagogical dispensaries (older children).

Our pupils are organized in the following courses:

• special school, pupils from 7 up to 21 years old, both mentally normal and retarded (in separate classes);

• kindergarten pupils (more than 3 years old);

• pupils with deep mental retardation - groups for revalidation and formation (from 3 up to 25 years old);

• individual early therapy, for children from 0 to 3 years old;

• individual and group rehabilitation for school children from 3 up to 21 years old.

INFRASTRUCTURE:

• classrooms;

• specialized classrooms (computer-, houshold-, and plastic arts- rooms);

• day care room;

• gimnastic hall;

• psychological care room;

• study for logopedical care;

• rooms for kinesitherapy, physicotherapy and hydrotherapy;

• medical and nursing room;

• rooms for early therapy;

• school library;

• cloak room;

• kanteen;

• garden with playing facilities.

FORMS OF ACTIVITY:

• psycho-physical therapy in small groups and for individuals;

• regular kindergarten and school classes (small groups);

• individual kinesitherapy;

• physical therapy;

• lectures, seminars and workshops for families of the disabled;

• individual consultations for families;

• activities with participation of families;

• group activities: celebration of festivities, theatre, music performances, concourses, excursions, etc.);

• organized holidays' rehabilitation.

SOME NUMBERS:

Starting on December the 1^st 1992, till June the 1^st 1999 the Center in Dabrowa Gornicza organized help for 361 children and youngsters.

As of today, i.e. June the 1^st 1999, there are 72 day-care pupils, 16 chidren are covered by ambulatory help and 71 little children take part in early therapy programme.

Their ailments can be classified as follows:

• Cerebral palsy 56 pupils

• Innate central nervous system disorders 3 pupils

• Neuro-muscular disorders 4 pupils

• Injuries of central nervous system 2 pupils

• Metabolic disorders of central nervous system 1 pupils

• Syndromes of multiple developmental disorders 22 pupils

• Psycho-motoric retardations of various degree 71 pupils (0-3 years).

It is beyond any doubt, that the needs of our pupils are enormous. As a rule they need multi-aspect revalidation and rehabilitation not only of their physical and motorical abilities, but also of disabled psychological, pedagogical and social spheres of their lives. Even for moderately successful therapy, co-ordinated efforts of various specialists are a must.

SYMPTOMS

Consultation with specialists is necessary if:

• A child was born of high-risk pregnancy;

• The birth was premature;

• The new-born got low Apgar evaluation;

• The child suffered from stroke, brain inflammation or meningitis;

• There is supposition of a genetic disorder.

Also in case of the following symptoms, observed by the close-ups:

• A child avoids eye contact;

• It does not return the smile;

• It does not babble or has difficulties with speech;

• Avoids body contact;

• Cries and shouts often, without apparent cause;

• Displays abnormal muscular tension (it is either too stiff or too loose);

• It seems retarded in motoric abilities, when compared with its coevals.

HELP FOR THE DISABLED AND FOR THEIR CENTER

All these so numerous activities of our Center are financed by:

• Dotations from the budget of the city of Dabrowa Gornicza;

• Profits from the economic activities of the Center;

• Dues paid by the parents of pupils (covering costs of meals);

• Donations from both individuals and institutions.

As the therapy, teaching and rehabilitation are very expensive and as we

would like to sustain and improve our abilities to help the disabled children, we
